The social history of Wester Hailes

Prospect Community Housing

Prospect Community Housing is the community based housing association for Wester Hailes, Edinburgh.  It was established 21 years ago by the local community to create a better place to live for local residents, with homes that people wanted to live in.  We believe that everyone has the right to affordable housing that is of good quality and maintained to a high standard.  Set up in 1989, Prospect has completed around 1,000 new homes, designed and constructed its own award winning office and worked with other partners to provide sports facilities, youth clubs, and employment and training opportunities for local people.  We have always aimed to play an active part in improving the quality of life of local people, and in supporting initiatives that promote a stable, vibrant community.  Projects undertaken are planned and delivered in partnership with local agencies and organisations.  Prospect is involved in over a dozen projects and developments, including work with disengaged young people, health and well being, and employability development.

Here at Prospect, we’ve always been interested in the story of Wester Hailes.  As an area its often defined only by the problems it faces, resulting in an unjustifiably negative image.  We think there is plenty to be proud of in Wester Hailes and that the community’s history is something to be remembered and celebrated.  We wanted to find a way to share information, views and images from this story as widely as possible and decided a blog would enable this to happen, and let people share their views and stories as well.
