From There… To Here

The social history of Wester Hailes

52 weeks on!

Yes, today marks a whole year of blogging about Wester Hailes!  Over the last 12 months we’ve published 123 posts on a whole range of topics and issues.  We’ve looked at everything from protest and community activism, demolition and rebuilding, the huts, the venchies, arts, sport, poetry, politics, transport, the carnival, music, fashion and even the pantomime!  We started the blog because we think that there is plenty to be proud of in Wester Hailes and that the community’s history is something that should be documented and celebrated.  Much of the material and photographs has been drawn from old copies of the Sentinel, the community newspaper that covered local news in Wester Hailes for over 30 years.  The Sentinel represented the community and acted as a unified voice, campaigning on local issues as well as publicising events and promoting a positive image of the area.

The blog has received over 13,600 views.  The three most popular posts are currently

Across The Years: The Wester Hailes Timeline
We put together a timeline that records key events and decisions that shaped how the area was built, developed and altered across the decades.

The Bad, The Good and The Ugly
Adam Dudley wrote a detailed analysis of the aspirations and realities behind the original construction of Wester Hailes.  Adam, an experienced architect specialising in community architecture based his article on his personal memories and experiences of working in Wester Hailes.

 The Huts
The post gave information about the film “The Huts”, an early Channel Four documentary made about Wester Hailes.  The Huts also features highly on searches that link to the blog.

In February we launched a Facebook page to link people to the blog and also to showcase more of the great photographs the Sentinel produced.  There are currently 800 people who like this page and over 380 photos to view.  We’ve recently added photos of the festival and carnival days.  If you’ve not checked it out you’ll find the page at From There To Here: A Wester Hailes Story.

We’re now looking forward to another whole year of blogging!  There’s certainly no shortage of material and plenty of topics to be covered.  If you think we’re missing topics out or you’ve got a memory to share just let us know!

I always read the blogs and think that they DO reflect the best of Wester Hailes and it’s people, their energy and commitment. The historical perspectives are interesting and valuable.
