This week we’re featuring pages from the Sentinel in February 1993. The front page story was the demolition of the Westburn high flats. The seven blocks in Westburn Gardens had been in place since the early seventies but were to be replaced by a new housing development. Also featured in this edition is
- Wester Hailes’s own soap. This new production was to be called Out Of The Blue starring local people as well as professional actors and members of the theatre group Moving Parts. You can read more about it in an earlier post by clicking here on Out Of The Blue.
- News about the WHEC swimming pool
- Neighbourhood and Community News around the area
- What’s On In and Around Wester Hailes

The centre pages of the paper are focused on an interview with Joe Becker
who was in Wester Hailes for a year as an exchange teacher. He taught at Clovenstone Primary School who sent one of their teachers to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in exchange. He was in charge of Primary 6 and during his year there was able to show them how the American voting system worked when he received an absentee ballot paper for the presidential elections that year. You can read his interview by clicking here on An American Teacher in Clovie!
Joe returned to Milwaukee and is now teaching at the Golda Meir school, specialising in literacy coaching.
