It’s nearly all over now. 32 teams reduced to two and it’s Holland and Spain who will contest the final of the World Cup on Sunday. But 21 years ago to the month it was Wester Hailes who lifted a football cup when Hailes United Ladies FC triumphed in a prestigious international tournament held in Verona, Italy.
Germany, Argentina – they best they could do was four in one game in South Africa but Hailes United scored a stonking five goals as they crushed Danish side B52 Aalborg in their 1989 cup final. And in winning through the previous rounds they conceded not a single goal. Eat your heart out Fabio!
Do you remember this fantastic achievement? Perhaps you were a member of the team or maybe your daughter or sister was…or your mum. We’d love to hear from anyone who has personal memories or other information to add to the story.
