Celebrity footballers

Still on our footballing theme, do you remember these teams?

The match was arranged to celebrate Euro ’96.  One team had local players, the other put together some celebrities.  How many do you recognise?

  1. This match was actually the official opening of the reformed Clovenstone Football Pitch.

The Wester Hailes Partnership had put some money into re-developing it and organised this match between a local select and Dukla Pumpherston – the ‘celebrity’ charity football team – to mark it’s completion.

Among those turning out for Dukla Pumpherston that day (and in the photo) are; Tony Roper (Jamesy Cotter in Rab C Nesbitt), Jimmy Bone (Partick Thistle, St Mirren, Hearts and a hundred other clubs), Evan Williams (Celtic’s goalkeeper in the 1970 European Cup Final – completing his journey from the sublime to the ridiculous), Bill McMurdo (the football agent who brokered the deal that took Maurice Johnston to Rangers).

From my increasingly unreliable recollection the game finished 3 – 0 to Dukla Pumpherston, with a 47 year old Jimmy Bone pulling the strings in midfield.
